Rugs: A Statement in Luxury by Carley Fisher about the author
The small brother (or sister) of room-sized carpet is the area rug. These
attractive, yet usually-affordable rugs typically are made from materials such
as wool, nylon, silk, olefin, or a blend of two or more of these.
The more expensive tend to be the ones made of wool and silk, but even these can
be found at good prices. Used correctly, these area rugs can be just as
effective in creating an atmosphere for your room as carpeting. So how do you
pick the right area rug?
Here are a few suggestions to keep in mind:
1) Think about what you
want the room's focal point to be. If there's some other feature in the
room that should draw a person's attention, then use a rug with soft colors that
blend in with the rest of the environment. However, if you're using a larger
area rug that you would like to be the room's focal point, pick one with bright,
noticeable colors that stand out. Also, remember that a round area rug,
especially a larger one, tends to work well as a room's focal point.
2) Think about whether you
want the rug to define a furniture grouping. If you do, the rug needs
to be big enough for all furniture pieces in your focal area to touch the rug.
3) Think about whether the
rug is meant to enhance the color scheme of your room. If so, you'll
want a rug that captures its accent colors.
4) Think about whether you
expect your area rug to contribute a sense of warmth and/or texture to the room.
If so, you'll want to pick a rug that has warm or neutral colors.
5) Think about the size of
your room and the size of the area that you want the rug to cover.
Also, some designers feel that placing the rug at an angle
gives some extra pizazz to the room. As you're thinking about the room's size,
remember to not underestimate how large of a rug you need. Often, people try to
remember the size of the room or area without an exact measurement. What usually
happens is that, in their mind, they see the room as smaller than it really is.
Consequently, they wind up with an area rug that's way too small for its
intended purpose. It's better to get a rug slightly bigger than you need than to
get one that's too small.
6) Finally, give some serious thought to buying an Oriental rug. Professional decorators tend to favor these over other options, because
of the great variety of colors, patterns, prices and sizes available. The best
Oriental rugs, if you decide to go this route, are said to be Turkish, Chinese,
Persian, and Indian.

difference in look, style, luxury and your home decor! |
